Professor: John Heidemann
Class location: DMC 252 (Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow Center for International and Public Affairs, just northeast of Bovard Auditorium and Tommy Trojan). Time: Monday/Wednesday noon-1:50pm.
Office hours: Monday 10:15am-11:45am, or by appointment location: SAL 311.
- All CSci652 students in my section are required to fill out the 652 web information form before the second class.
- The primary web site for this class will be my CSci652 moodle (moodle is an open source course management system).
-
CSci652 has a CSci551 or CSci651 as a prerequesite, or permission of the instructor. If you have not had graduate computer networking, please e-mail me for why you want to take the class and why you belive you are prepared. (I’m included to offer exceptions, but I want to hear from you.) Enrolemnt options:
-
If you already took CSci551 or CSci651 at USC, you’re in!
-
If you took the prerequesites for CSci551 and CSci651 at USC, the CS advising staff will admit you. Those prereqs are CSci402 (undergrad OS) and EE450 (undergrad networks). They’ll let you in (and you don’t need to e-mail me.)
-
If you took the equivalent of the above courses (that is: either graduate networking, or both undergraduate OS and undergraduate networking), but somewhere else, please list the course numbers, textbooks, professors, and grades and e-mail that to me. Please mention if you’re a MS or PhD student (although that’s not a deciding factor for me). I’ll admit you.
-
If you didn’t actually have any of those classes, but you think you know the material. E-mail me a paragraph describing why. Please also (1) mention one neat thing you learned in undergrad OS or networking, (2) state that you realize you may have extra work to do if you need to learn background material others have done, and you’re willing to do that.. Please mention if you’re a MS or PhD student (although that’s not a deciding factor for me). I’ll probably admit you.
-
- I’m happy to admit interested MS students. (The course is only CSci652, there is no 552 number, and the content will be identical for MS and PhD students. If you need explicit approval, please send me e-mail.)
- The Moodle will require student accounts. Instructions to get the accounts will appear here in August 2023. To get a Moodle account, first fill out the the CSci552 web information form, then it will give you an “enrollment key” and let you create a moodle account. (Sorry for the multiple steps.)
- A draft syllabus [PDF] is currently available (updated 2023-08-19).
- We will have short midterm 1 on Wed. Sept. 20, 2023, at noon, short midterm 2 on Wed. Oct. 25, 2023 at noon, and the final is Friday, Dec. 8, 11am-1pm (the university mandated time). These exam dates and times are mandatory. I do not do make-up exams. If you have travel plans, please schedule accordingly.
-
We will begin lecture on first day class, including discussing the papers for that day (listed below). Students are strongly encouraged to download the papers for the first day and read them before coming to class. (For classes after the first day, reading the papers before-hand is required.)
The first set of papers are publicly available on the web:
- The remainder of the papers will be available only through the moodle.
